The puppies are typically kept in relatively small cages with glass windows so people can look at them before buying. While these puppies may look playful, cute and healthy on the outside, the opposite often turns out to be true when you take them home to raise them. Many pet stores claim that they only purchase puppies from licensed dog breeders, but that is often not the case. The vast majority come from puppy mills or backyard breeders who breed puppies in massive numbers in order to make a profit. These kinds of breeders care little for the health and well-being of the puppies, as taking them to the veterinarian and providing them with things like comfortable bedding would cost the breeders lots of money. No responsible dog breeder would ever knowingly sell their puppies to a pet store, where anyone with cash can purchase the pets that they have worked so hard to raise. When you purchase a puppy at a pet store for a few hundred dollars, you may think you are getting a great deal. In reality, your new puppy will probably cost you thousands of dollars in veterinary bills because no attention has been paid to the puppys health and socialization. The pet store takes no responsibility for the health of your puppy, so you will be forced to pay the expenses out of your own pocket. When puppy mills sell their puppies to pet stores and animal brokers, they are often transported in cruel and inhumane conditions. Some dont even survive the trip.
